Katia hurricane weakened slightly Monday as it moved northwest across the Atlantic, but maintains a force of a category two storm.

On Monday morning, the maximum sustained winds decreased to 161 kph (100 mph), but the National Hurricane Center reported that it expected to strengthen and become more powerful a hurricane by Tuesday.

Todd Kimberlain, hurricane specialist, said there is less chance of Katia landfall but the storm's winds could still affect the United States east coast as it heads north.

Kimberlain added that the Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States and New England still must remain alert to Katia.

The vortex Katia was located at 645 kilometers (400 miles) north of the Leeward Islands and was moving northwest at about 19 kph (12 miles per hour).

It is expected that large swells and rip currents generated in its wake affecting the U.S. East Coast, Bermuda, the Greater Antilles and the eastern beaches of the Bahamas.
